Gmail
Before you decide to use Gmail als mail client: Genkgo does not recommend using Gmail as e-mail client. This has to do with the following reasons:
- Gmail only supports the e-mail POP protocol. They don’t support IMAP.
- Gmail only retreives e-mails from the inbox and ignores all other folders, including Spam. This might cause some important e-mails to get lost.
- Gmail is the place where all your e-mails will be saved (including all sent and archived e-mails). Additionally, your e-mail data can end up abroad, which is a privacy issue.
- Gmail works perfectly for @gmail.com addresses, but less good for external addresses (unless you use the professional Google package ‘Gsuite’).
Set up Gmail POP account
In Gmail, go to the gear icon in the top right corner and click on ‘Settings’. Then go to the tab ‘Accounts and import’. Click on ‘Add a mail account’ under ‘Check mail from other accounts’.
You will now see a popup. First, enter your e-mail address. In the next screen, enter your username (e-mail address) and password. As POP server, enter ‘mail.genkgo.net’. The port is ‘995’. For the optimal configuration you need to select the first three options: Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server., Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail and Label incoming messages.
In the next step, indicate that you are using the account to send e-mail as well. Then enter the name that should be used as the sender name. Finally, indicate the server that will handle the sending. The SMTP server is ‘mail.genkgo.net’, the port is ‘587’ and the username is your e-mail address. Use the recommended method TLS.
For security, Gmail will ask you for a verification code. The code was sent in an e-mail, which can be found with webmail. After entering the verification code, you are done and the account has been added. We recommend that you select ‘when replying to a message’ for ‘Reply from the same address the message was sent to’.
