Spam and ratelimit for sending messages

E-mail traffic consists largely - more than half - of spam. This has consequences for incoming and outgoing e-mail. In this article we will explain with measures are in place. It is good to realize that Genkgo deliveres e-mail as an additional service. We focus on our own softare. When e-mail hosting is important to your organization, it could be that an expert in e-mail hosting might be a better solution for you.

Spam filtering incoming messages

On our servers there is a spamfiltering mechanism in place. E-mail that is classified as spam, will be placed in the Junk folder. However, it is possible that spam is delivered in your inbox. When the amount of spam in your inbox is really, you can contact our supportdesk to discuss if there is anything that Genkgo can do about that. We cannot tell whether we are able to solve your problem, this is dependant on the case.

Unfortunately, Genkgo might also classify legitimate e-mail as spam and place it in the Junk folder. Often this is due to fault at the server of the sender of the message. They are using invalid settings, e.g. invalid of missing SPF, DKIM or DMARC.

Ratelimit for outgoing messages

When you send a message with many recipients through our e-mail hosting platform, it is possible that you hit a ratelimit. This is a security mesaure that prevents damage when a spammer would be active in the Genkgo network.

In the past we have had the situation that a virus/bot was installed on a computer of a client of Genkgo, and that bot was able to send an unlimited amount of messages. Because of the huge amount of spam that is delivered in short time at providers like Gmail and Hotmail there is reputation damage for Genkgo. It is impossible to solve such an issue with monitoing. By the time that an automated monitor has noticed that there might be a spammer active the damage is already done. In such a situation a tremendous amount of work has to be done to reverse the dame with parties like Hotmail, Gmail but also at some smaller parties. An employee of Genkgo has to dedicate all his work for such a problem. In order to prevent such a situation, we have acivated a ratelimit for outgoing traffic of 100 messages per 10 minutes.

Genkgo advises clients to use the Communication application for sending large quantities of messages. Next to the fact that there is no ratelimit with that application, there are more technical and operational advantages of using the Communication application, e.g. an subscribe option.
