Migration

If you are new at Genkgo, you might want to migrate your hosting. Here is how:

Which hosting scenarios are possible?

When you start using the Genkgo hosting services as a new client, there are several possible scenarios. Below, each scenario is described.

Scenario 1: Migration domain name, migration e-mail

This is the most common scenario. You don’t need any technical knowledge for this. In this scenario, we migrate your existing domain name to Genkgo. We also migrate the existing e-mail accounts. The only things we need from you are:

  • Migration token for the domain name (also called EPP code). You can request this code from your previous provider. NB: Usually this is only possible via e-mail, from an e-mail address known to the provider. Read more about this in ‘Migraging a domain name’.
  • A list of e-mail accounts that you want to migrate, including username, password and server data. We only migrate the so-called IMAP e-mail. If you don’t know if your organisation uses IMAP, you can ask your previous provider. For more information about IMAP, read ‘Migrating e-mail’.

Scenario 2: No migration of domain name and e-mail

For this scenario, technical knowledge of support from the existing provider is essential. This scenario is only for communities that want to keep the domain name and e-mail under their own or under external management. To make the website and software available with this domain name, its settings need to be changed.

The required changes:

  • Setting up the DNS settings of the domain. You can do this in the Admin (or ‘control panel’) of the exiting provider. NB: Make sure you duly check whether your have the login data of this environment.
  • We will send you the needed changes. Subsequently, you can enter these (or have the provider enter these) in the DNS changes.
  • If you want to use e-mail via Genkgo, it is important that you inform the current hosting provider that the mail via Genkgo is not spam. You can do this to add the following line to the DNS records:
    SPF/TXT "v=spf1 include:spf.genkgo.net -all".
Is an SPF/TXT record already present? Add the following to the line:
    include:spf.genkgo.net
  • Optional: You can let Genkgo change the settings with the external provider. The costs to do this will be charged.

Scenario 3: New domain name

If you would like to have a new domain name, nothing needs to be migrated. The only thing you need to do is tell us which domain name you would like to have. Genkgo will take care of the rest. If this is a new domain name, but you have already requested this domain name somewhere else, and no website is connected to it yet? Then follow the steps under ‘Migrating a domain name’.
