Migrating a domain name
The migration of a domain is a process of several steps. NB: Sometimes, these steps take up more time than expected because multiple parties are involved. Sometimes the trajectory is delayed if the original registrant of the domain is not active in the organisation anymore. Make sure you timely start with the first step to prevent these kind of problems.
The moment of actual migration depends on your agreements with the registrar (the existing provider), such as the length of the contract. A registrar manages the domain name. Take the following steps to migrate the domain name:
1. Check for active subdomains
A subdomain is the part of the address that is in front of the domain name (in most cases this is ‘www’). A web address with a subdomain could look as follows: http://subdomain.domainname.nl. A list of active subdomains is available on request at your previous hosting provider.
2. Request the migration token from the previous hosting provider
The previous hosting provider has the migration token (a unique identification number that belongs to the domain name, also called a EPP code) that is necessary for migrating the domain name. Ask your old hosting provider how you can request the migration token. This differs per registrar. The previous hosting provider is obligated to provide the migration token within 5 days after the request. Tip! For an easy migration, indicate the expected date of migration to your previous provider. Check if your contract will be terminated correctly as well.
3. Let Genkgo execute the migration
Genkgo will commission the migration of your domain name. Send the token that you received from the previous provider to Genkgo so that Genkgo can trigger the migration. If the domain name is followed by ‘.nl’, no further action from your side is necessary. However, if the domain name is followed by ‘.com’, the original regististrant of the domain will receive an e-mail in which he/she is asked to confirm the migration. Do you have a domain name with a different extension (e.g. ‘.org’, ‘.be’, ‘.biz’, etc.)? The procedure described above may be different for you.
